After developing an interest in guitars, George`s mother bought him a second-hand "box" guitar from a friend. He couldn`t play, and his family certainly couldn`t afford lessons so he began to teach himself.
He became friends with Paul McCartney, and they used to have "jam" sessions together. After a while, George was introduced to John Lennon by Paul. John was instantly impressed with George`s guitar playing and immediately invited him to join The Quarrymen.
It was at this time that things were beginning to look promising for the group.
